About MA Professional Writing at University College Falmouth

Let's try and give you an idea of who we are and what we do.

MA Professional Writing at Falmouth is for people who want to start making a living from writing.  It is an intensively practical, commercially-focused experience designed to enable you to graduate with:

  • An understanding of your writing abilities and a career plan
  • A portfolio of professional-standard writing which reflects your abilities and aspirations
  • An understanding of how the writing industry works and a network of contacts to get you going
  • The ability to promote and sell your work - and yourself as a professional.
You can undertake the course in two ways: as a full-time, campus-based student over one year, or as a part-time home-based student over two years.  To find out more, please visit the main University College Falmouth website.

Meanwhile, here is an example of how we throw our students in at the deep end........

THE BOLSTER PROJECT 2008
(In memory of our colleague Jim Hall)

Within five minutes of arrival, full-time students were told they were going to devise a story, write a script and make a film in five days. They squeaked a bit, but we explained that one of the aims of this project is to demonstrate that a writer's work will not always be read or received as intended! In this scenario it is interpreted by actors, directors and editors before it gets anywhere near the intended audience. So something to think about.

Here is a summary of how the project worked, written by one of the participants.

And here are some pictures showing the group at work...
